-WARNING- THERE ARE RS232 to USB converters which claim to be using the Prolific PL-2303 chip set - when inserted in the USB port, the "Device description" reads "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port" and the hardware ID is "USB\VID_067B&PID_2303&REV_0300", which is the signature ID of the Prolific chip set However, the device does not work (either with the included drivers or with the original drivers from the Prolific website). Furthermore, when visiting the Prolific website you see the following warning:
Please be warned that counterfeit (fake) PL-2303HX (Chip Rev A) USB to Serial Controller ICs using Prolific's trademark logo, brand name and device drivers, were being sold in the China market. Counterfeit IC products show exactly the same outside chip markings but generally are of poor quality and causes Windows driver compatibility issues (Yellow Mark Error Code 10). We issue this warning to all our customers and consumers to avoid confusion and false purchase."
That is exactly what we have observed, both on Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP x86 systems. I know many people are trying to save a few bucks by buying cheap electronics designed and made in China, but the old saying goes... "you get what you pay for".
The bottom line is, cheap knock offs do not work, and thus, it is a complete waste of time to purchase it and put yourself through the frustration.
Because of the knock offs out there we can only support a cable purchased through us directly where we test them and provide support.
